Free Ashtakavarga Calculator

See where your chart is strong. Ashtakavarga scores every sign by the benefic support it receives — your Sarvashtakavarga (SAV) strength map and the per-planet Bhinnashtakavarga (BAV) grid, computed with real Swiss-Ephemeris mathematics.

What is a Good Ashtakavarga Score?Total: 337 Bindus (~28/sign)

Sarvashtakavarga (SAV) measures the collective benefic support each zodiac sign receives from the 7 visible planets and Lagna. Scores determine transit fruitfulness:

30+ Bindus (Strong)Smooth results, benefic transits flourish.
25 – 29 Bindus (Average)Neutral vitality; depends on dasha & dignity.
< 25 Bindus (Deficit)Requires effort; Saturn/Rahu transits feel heavy.

How Ashtakavarga works

Ashtakavarga means “eight-fold division.” For each of the seven planets, classical rules (from the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra) specify which houses — counted from each of eight reference points: the seven planets and the ascendant — receive a benefic point, or bindu. Tally those contributions and every sign ends up with a score.

Collect a single planet’s contributions and you have its Bhinnashtakavarga (BAV) — a row of 0–8 bindus per sign. Add the contributions of all eight reference points and you have the Sarvashtakavarga (SAV) — the overall strength of each sign, summing to a fixed 337 bindus across the zodiac.

The real power of Ashtakavarga is in transit timing: a planet moving through a sign rich in bindus tends to give results; through a barren sign it struggles. Veda Lumina computes both layers with the Swiss-Ephemeris engine and, in the app, overlays them on live transits.

Understanding Your SAV Bindu Scores

Across the 12 zodiac signs, Sarvashtakavarga allocates 337 total benefic bindus. An average sign receives ~28 bindus. Use these benchmarks to read your natal chart and upcoming transits:

Deficit Zone
< 25 Bindus

Houses under 25 bindus require conscious effort and remedial stabilization. Slow-moving transits (Saturn, Rahu) here manifest resistance or delays.

Neutral Zone
25 – 29 Bindus

Balanced vitality. Results in these signs depend heavily on planetary dignity, aspectual support, and currently operating dasha periods.

Fortified Zone
30+ Bindus

High resilience and fruitfulness. Benefic transits (Jupiter, Venus) across signs with 30+ points trigger material expansion, career breakthroughs, and recovery.

Frequently asked questions

What is Ashtakavarga?

Ashtakavarga (“eight-fold division”) is a Vedic scoring system that grades every sign of your chart by how much benefic support it receives from the seven planets and the ascendant. Each contributor awards a “bindu” (point) to signs it favours; the totals reveal where your chart is strong and where it is fragile.

What is the difference between BAV and SAV?

Bhinnashtakavarga (BAV) is the per-planet score — how many bindus a single planet contributes to each sign (its own row of 0–8 per sign). Sarvashtakavarga (SAV) is the grand total across all contributors for each sign, ranging roughly 0–56, and is the headline measure of a sign’s overall strength.

What is a good SAV score?

The 12 signs share a fixed total of 337 bindus, averaging about 28 per sign. As a rule of thumb: below 25 is comparatively weak, 25–29 is average, and 30 or more is strong. Higher SAV signs tend to deliver results more smoothly, especially when transited by benefics.

What do I need to calculate it?

Your birth date, birth time, and birth place. Ashtakavarga is built from your full natal chart — the sign positions of all planets and the ascendant — so accurate birth details (especially time) matter.

Why does Rahu and Ketu’s treatment differ?

Classical Parashari Ashtakavarga is computed for the seven visible grahas (Sun through Saturn) plus the ascendant. The lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu are handled separately in extended systems; this calculator follows the classical seven-plus-lagna method for the core bindu totals.

How is Ashtakavarga used for predictions?

Its primary use is transit (gochar) timing: when a planet transits a sign with high bindus — especially its own kakshya — results tend to manifest; low-bindu transits tend to underdeliver. The classic “double transit” of Jupiter and Saturn over high-bindu signs is a powerful timing signal. This calculator shows your natal strength map; the live transit overlay is in the full app.

Does a high SAV mean nothing bad happens?

No. Ashtakavarga measures the quantity of support a sign receives, not moral good or bad. A high-SAV sign handles transits and dashas more resiliently, but outcomes still depend on dignity, yogas, dasha and transit context — which is why it is read alongside the rest of the chart.

Which ayanamsa does this use?

The Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard for Parashari Vedic astrology, computed with the same Swiss-Ephemeris engine used throughout Veda Lumina and validated against Jagannatha Hora.

What are Ashtakavarga Kakshyas and how do they refine transits?

Every zodiac sign is divided into 8 equal micro-sectors of 3°45' each, known as Kakshyas, ruled in fixed planetary order (Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Lagna). A transiting planet only produces favorable results during the specific days it passes through a Kakshya whose lord contributed a bindu in its BAV chart. The full Veda Lumina app computes these live micro-windows automatically.

What is Shodhya Pinda and how does Shodhana reduction work?

Classical Parashari Ashtakavarga applies a two-stage reduction process: Trikona Shodhana (triplicity reduction across signs of the same element) followed by Ekadhipatya Shodhana (dual-sign lordship reduction). The resulting reduced bindus are multiplied by zodiacal and planetary multipliers to yield the Shodhya Pinda (sum of Rashi Pinda and Graha Pinda), used by classical practitioners for longevity analysis and predicting milestone years.

How do you calculate Rasi Pinda and Graha Pinda?

Rasi Pinda is computed by multiplying the reduced bindus in each sign by its classical Rasi multiplier (Aries 7, Taurus 10, Gemini 8, Cancer 4, Leo 10, Virgo 5, Libra 7, Scorpio 8, Sagittarius 9, Capricorn 5, Aquarius 11, Pisces 12) and summing the results. Graha Pinda multiplies the bindus in signs occupied by the 7 planets by each planet’s inherent factor (Sun 5, Moon 5, Mars 8, Mercury 5, Jupiter 10, Venus 7, Saturn 5). The sum of Rasi Pinda and Graha Pinda forms the final Shodhya Pinda.

How do transiting Jupiter and Saturn trigger Shodhya Pinda nakshatras?

According to Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, multiplying a planet’s Shodhya Pinda by its raw bindus and dividing by 27 yields a remainder that points to a specific nakshatra from Ashwini. When slow-moving transiting planets (Jupiter for expansion, Saturn for karmic duties) pass through this nakshatra or its trinal nakshatras, significant life developments manifest.

What is the difference between Ashtakavarga and Ashtakvarga?

They refer to the same classical system. "Ashtakavarga" is the formal Sanskrit IAST transliteration, while "Ashtakvarga" is the common phonetic spelling across India. Both refer to the eight-fold bindu scoring of the 12 zodiac signs.
