Planetary Strength & Behavioral Dynamics
Shadbala & Planetary Potency Matrix
A planet's placement in a sign is only a fraction of its true power. Shadbala computes six independent mathematical vectors of strength — Positional, Directional, Temporal, Motional, Natural, and Aspectual — combined with 12 Sayanadi behavioral avasthas and planetary ray metrics.
The System Stack
Six dimensions of planetary potency measurement
Shadbala translates raw astronomical coordinates into quantitative potency (measured in Virupas and Rupas), determining whether a planet has the stamina to manifest its promised outcomes.
Sthana Bala (Positional Strength)
5 components: Uccha (exaltation), Saptavargiya (divisional dignity), Ojhayugma (odd/even sign), Kendradi (quadrant placement), and Drekkana.
Dig Bala (Directional Strength)
Measures directional zenith points: Sun & Mars in 10th (South), Jupiter & Mercury in 1st (East), Saturn in 7th (West), Moon & Venus in 4th (North).
Kala Bala (Temporal Potency)
Day/Night diurnal cycles (Natonnatha), Lunar fortnight (Paksha), Tribhaga, Year/Month/Day/Hour rulers (Varsha/Masa/Dina/Hora), and declination (Ayana).
Chesta Bala (Motional Velocity)
Measures motional speed, stationing, and retrograde intensification factors.
Naisargika & Drik Bala
Intrinsic natural luminosity (Sun strongest, Saturn least) combined with the cumulative aspectual vector sum from all other planets.
12 Sayanadi Avasthas & Rashmi Bala
Analyzes planetary behavioral moods (Sayana sleeping, Bhojana eating, Sabha courtly assembly, etc.) and physical/subtle planetary ray units.
How It Works
How the Shadbala engine quantifies strength
- 1
Calculates positional subdivisions across the Shodashavarga to determine Sthana Bala.
- 2
Measures planetary distance from directional peak points to compute Dig Bala.
- 3
Evaluates diurnal time, lunar phase, and planetary hour to compute Kala Bala.
- 4
Calculates motional speed relative to mean motion to derive Chesta Bala.
- 5
Sums all six vectors into Virupas, normalizes against classical minimum requirements, and calculates Sayanadi avasthas and Rashmi rays.
What this is — and what it isn't
- A rule-based synthesis of classical Vedic techniques — not a statistically back-tested predictor. It surfaces classical indications, not guaranteed outcomes.
- Shadbala measures planetary capacity and vitality — a planet with high Shadbala is strong, but whether it acts for good or challenge depends on its functional lordship.
- Strength scores indicate structural capacity, not guaranteed fortune.
